As I said in another thread in Sardelac Sanitarium, Runescape has an effective solution. After both parties click Accept, the trade is no longer modifiable and can only be canceled... can't quick scam that.
The only way you'd avoid this scam is waiting a random period of time, at least 10 seconds, after clicking Submit. Basically the scammer is trying to predict when you'd hit Accept and tries to change his amount of money immediately before you hit the button. But waiting 10 seconds or more just makes it a guessing game... is he going to change his amount first, or are you going to click Accept before him? That kind of game shouldn't be played in a transaction.

So THAT's why a lot of people I trade with don't hit accept right away! Good tactic to reduce scamming, I guess. Like I've said in another thread - if they modify the trade when it looks like what you've agreed to is there, WATCH OUT!

I like the thing Runescape does...would make a lot of sense, and heck...that's what i did two months ago as a newbie. Due to inexperience. But i've been looking for scammers all day selling this bloody rune...and i wouldn't call me inexperienced any more. All day i've been looking for the scammers...in order for something like this NOT to happen. And i'm cold dead out of cash, no rune, no way to get anything redeemed.

thank you for handling this case.
I'm still very mad at him, as this is the best item i've ever gotten...but i do agree with the way you guys are handling the situation.
Talking to others I have found whispers of some auto-mouse programs...ones that hit the "submit" and "accept" button too fast for humans to track. I'd be wary of those, as auto-recruit programs are ruining a lot of games (I also play www.darkthrone.com and a couple others). Maybe you could make it so once someone hits Accept, you have to cancel the trade instead of Modify?

It's really easy to make this 'timing scam' impossible.
Whenever one party modifies the trade, the other party should have his end of the bargain backed up to the point where they have to press the submit button. That would make it so you need to press 2 buttons in a row, uninterrupted by the other party fooling around with the modify trade button.

If you did legitimately win that auction, it should still be in your "buying" section, and you can look it up to see. If the seller was indeed being a complete jerk, I'd give him/her negative feedback for not following through on the sale. Before you do that, make doubly sure that there wasn't a reserve price or any other disclaimer on the auction.
I've been jerked around by people who refused to buy the item they won, usually claiming one of their friends set up their auction account and bid in their name. I think that's a bogus excuse, but what are ya gonna do? I now put a disclaimer in all my auctions to the effect that if you win and don't pay, I'll give you negative feedback. Seems to have worked.

I posted this in another thread but it applies to this thread as well. Beware of the trick being used there. It will cost you dearly.

Quoted for truth ... that was the one positive thing about the economy/trade system in that game ... apart from that, however, Jagex did very little to control the outrageous price gains in certain items, and the economy in general moved around more than the unibomber ... oh well, times gone by.
I don't feel quite so bad having played Runescape now that I see Savio has *runs from the Runescape flamers and hides behind Savio*
PS: if anyone ever tells you that you're taking too long with your trade, they are most likely trying to scam you. Same with the "i'm having lag" excuse. Just be patient and tell them to do the same.

Scammed for the first time, or was I?
Something like this was bound to happen
Of course I (Arduinna Lightarrow), was very glad finding a Sup. Vigor, therefore I wanted to sell it ASAP to get me some money for my FOW armor. Most of the time I have to yell WTS for half an hour before I finally are able to sell my stuff, but this girl wispered me just after I posted the message. Maybe because of the trading happening so fast she was able to scam me, because i have seen this trick often, but never fell for it...
After taking some screenshots I realized (to make matter worse) she didn't actually scammed me. She whispered me {35?}, something i wrongly understood for being 35k, not 35g and agreed with a {yup}. In this way we agreed to trade my rune for her 35g only, not making her a scammer....
As a final note, please people, take good notice of the information on the Trade Window, before accepting any offers. The Trade Window is always right. Scammers won't stop scamming, the only way to prevent a scam is being on your toes during the entire trading session. There's just a small percentage who want to scam, better not let them win. It's still a game after all
Well, back to the ettins it is (only 34 ecto to go yet )
(As a side note, why is the Ignore List limited to 10 people only? I need at least room for 50!)

Scammers.... They're not as bright as you might think...
Figured I'd post this. Guy tried to scam me about an hour ago and well....
I didn't think he'd hit accept after I changed my offer, I thought he'd just close the trade. I hope he didn't work too hard for those thingies
BTW: mursatt tokens kinda look like ectoplasm, but they're quite worthless, hence scammers try to fool quick buyers into thinking they're ectos.

the whole altheas ashes thing worked for me... i bought them for 200gp cos i was too lazy to go through the quest with my 4 character (n/me) and it worked no problem. i think you just need to have the queat active and the barradin family urn in your inventory. the ashes dont actually end up in the urn they look just like a pile of glittering dust.
so im not sure if its a scam or not as it worked for me.. im just working a warrior through now ill buy the ashes again and see if it works for me again

70 or 70 K !!
i didn't read all the 18 pages of the thread so forgive me if i repeat issue that someone posted before.
i wanted to sell my absorption sup rune (and until now i can't coz alot of scammers they are jumping on sellers of this rune )
me: WTS sup rune of absorption for 70 K..whisp me
him: i'll buy it for 70
me: where are you ?
him: near storage
start trading i find he put 70GP..i didn't accept of course
me: (imagine my reaction for the scam)
me: i took screenshot of our conversation and i'll send it to Anet..kiss the game goodbye.
him: LOL..did you see me typed K in chat...I GUESS NO..GG
i searched between his words if he sayed 70K even once ..but he didn't
so i didn't sent the screenshot for Anet, coz i already accepted selling the rune for 70 in my talk
scammers these days trying to get away with scamming without proof on them, even if you took screenshot.
since then i know how to deal with them, and when they are saying i will buy it for 30 or 25 i always ask them 30 what ?if he scammer he will not reply,if he said 30K he will be noob scammer got himself in trouble or serious buyer want to buy the item that i have.

ive saw ALOT of people trying to scam me when buying sapphires. they will do the infamous put one in the trade window then hit cancel. then say that their inventory is full. they will then open trade back up and put "heart of ice" or "ice" in the window because they both look exactly like sapphires and they hope you wont pay attention.

Just need this confirmed...

not sure if this was answered or not and the next few pages were spam so Ill post this.
This isnt a scam, Ive done the Ashes quest like this 3 times now and I bought them for around 200g each time. Its an easy and quick way to get 2k exp.

yes, its not a scam
BUT keep in mind you have to finish the first quest (you need to find her first, or whats left of her )
The second quest you can just use the ashes

ToA's favourite scammer
People that always go to ToA will probably know who I'm talking about.
He's always there at ToA, offering to buy ecto at strangely higher prices. He will of course, pull the old 'Gold instead of Plat hoping the trader wouldn't notice' scam every time. Practically every regular in ToA knows that he scams, and probably more reports have been sent in. Some newbies will STILL get cheated though, seen a few 'omg wtf wheres my money you *****' while idling there.
Now here's the kicker: I reported him 3 times with screenshots of the attempted scam over 3 weeks, and he's STILL THERE. I'm sure many others have sent in their reports too.
My question is this:
Is ANet slacking? Or simply doesn't care about this? Because I'm quite sure that newbies are still being scammed by this retard. Yet he's still there, trying to pull off his scams. Go take a look tomorrow, I'm sure you'll see him there.
I'll go take another last screen and report it tomorrow though, that will finally shed lighton this whole situation.
